MEDIUM: Assemblage Art | Mixed Media | Textiles SPECIALTY: ✔ Artistic Mindset & Process ✔ Technique Demos ✔ Creating Bodies of Work
Alysn has a regular presence in galleries in Aotearoa, Australia and the UK; her work is regularly featured in printed and online interviews and reviews; she has an international teaching schedule; and has authored several books about her techniques.
Alysnsays: ‘I have an experimental and curious nature leading to continuously evolving and changing works and media, investigating new dimensions as they develop. I continuously feel that I have merely scratched the surface in terms of the possibilities of my chosen medium, and long may that continue! It is apleasure to adapt my ideas into formats which can be used by other artists to enhance their own practice and this has led to me sharing my obsession with others through workshops, books, interviews and exhibitions. I lived in the Midlands of England for most of my life, and developed the Beetroot Tree Gallery for 13 years before moving to Aotearoa/New Zealand in 2012.’
What you will get from me: My specialties lie in textile, stitch and fibre art techniques especially those which allow me to explore unusual (for textiles) materials such as metal, wire, latex, paint, paper, aggregates etc. In the mentoring sessions I am happy to cover skills, materials and technique as well as design, concept and your artistic voice development. As a practicing artist and having experience with developing and running galleries, and previously mentoring emerging artists through practical business skills I am also happy to work with you to develop the ‘working on your business’ skills such as day to day practicalities and strategies, organising exhibitions, applying for shows, approaching galleries, pricing etc.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alysn Midgelow-Marsden (she/her) is a British born, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland region artist creating mesmerising work with intertwining lines, structures and patterns. Each piece is an embodiment of ‘captured feelings’. Her art forges a symphony of textures that resonate deep within the soul. Within this tactile landscape a profound narrative unfolds, one that weaves threads of support and connectivity. Her creations become vessels of inner fortitude and positive purpose, a visual sanctuary of empowerment and evoke a complexity softened by a lyrical fluidity. Each piece encapsulates both the physical and the psychological, inviting us to explore the contours of our bodies and the landscapes of our emotions. Spending time with Alysn’s works is an invitation to embrace intimate, sometimes visceral, dialogues with your personal experiences. In her work Alysn contemplates human existence within a universe seemingly devoid of inherent purpose. This contemplation becomes a catalyst for celebrating the brilliance of our consciousness and a meditation on the profound beauty of being.
Stainless steel, brass, copper, bronze cloths, iron wires and gilding metal are regularly used and the muted hues of oxidizing patinas and heat treatments emerge as silent storytellers, whispering tales of transformation over time. The delicate dance of form is thereby allowed to accentuate the intricate textures. Her compositions include wall based and freestanding, and range from petite to substantially large.
