I approach each individualโs artwork without preconception and will only advise after carefully analyzing their artwork and reference photos in relation to what they tell me about their goals, intentions, successes and challenges. By doing this, I can usually find a constructive way for them to move forward. I believe in evaluating honestly, but with kindness, and always backing up my observations with an explanation. When critiquing, itโs important to not just point out mistakes, but to also point out areas of success.
Painting is a quest for dynamic visual balance; therefore, circulating a viewerโs eye throughout a well-designed composition is of utmost importance. Because choice of subject matter (objective, semi-objective or non-objective) is not a main concern, I work in any style or technique that is best suited to express a particular idea, exploring it tirelessly and thriving on the uncertainty of not always knowing my next move.
Some of my reasons for painting include
an attraction to certain light effects or unique compositions.
a desire to express deeply felt emotions and ideas โ either narrative, poetic or formal; and
an appreciation for the simple joys of painting or drawing as an exercise in skill and draughtsmanship.
Art thrives on change. Without change, there is stagnation. New ideas are everywhere. If I stay open, they continually flow toward me from many directions, including nature, people, places, and literature.
Regarding Teaching, I believe it is as important to cultivate and circulate an art spirit as it is to teach skill and technique. This art spirit is about receiving and passing knowledge onto others – about interconnectedness and cooperation. By teaching and kindling this spirit, I gain new perspectives about my own work and that of others.
