Course Description

If your paintings aren’t turning out how you pictured, it’s not that you’re bad, it’s just that you’re lacking a system to take you from idea to masterpiece!

Master Artist, Joseph Lorusso, is teaching oil painters of any level how to create a systematic approach to your studio painting.

Joseph will be sharing his SIGNATURE 3-STEP PROCESS which will take you from concept to completed painting so that you grow your understanding of the full creative process, and discover what you might be missing!

Students will choose to do a painting of their choice in Joseph’s 3-step approach. At the end of the course, there will be critiques, and Joseph will be there to support you along the way!

You Will Learn How To:

This course will also cover technique, skills, and concepts that will help you use your artwork to tell a powerful story that draws more people to it.

    • Hog hair Filbert oil brushes (Winsor Newton or Raphealor Utrecht brands); #2, 4, 6, 8 &10
    • Natural or synthetic # 3 or #5 round sable (must keep a point)
    • Stretched Canvas or Panels: 2 to 3
    • Either of the following is acceptable. Sizes must be between 16×20 – 18X24
    • 1⁄4” Gessoed masonite or gessoed illustration board.
    • Please use acrylic gesso to prime boards OR Stretched prepared canvas or canvas panels, or mounted canvas

    MISCELLANEOUS:

    • Odorless Paint Thinner or Mineral Spirits
    • Paint Rags or Paper Towels
    • Palette cups to hold medium
    • Regular Linseed oil AND Thickened Linseed oil (and a small container to mix these two oils together.
    • Disposable palette or wooden or masonite palette
    • Can or container for paint thinner.
    • Drawing pencil or charcoal pencil, kneaded eraser

    Instructor Bio

    Says Lorusso,

    “I believe truly great art serves as a trigger into something deeper within all of us”.

    The mood and emotion conveyed in Lorusso’s paintings evokes a deep sense of beauty found in the quiet times of daily living.

    His people are mysterious, lonely, romantic and yet familiar, placed in settings we often see ourselves.

    Lorusso’s paintings have gained notoriety by their ability to connect with the viewer, resonating in a way that is intimate and personal.

    Joseph Lorusso was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1966 and received his formal training at the American Academy of Art. He went on to receive his B.F.A. degree from the Kansas City Art Institute.

    While in school, Lorusso majored in watercolor and considers himself self-taught as an oil painter. He learned to paint by studying the works of master painters, often losing himself in the halls of the Chicago Art Institute during lunch hours, which frequently turned into afternoons of self-study.

    Throughout his career Lorusso has concentrated on honing his powers of observation, especially as it concerns to color, texture, form and composition. Lorusso’s paintings have been described as warm and dreamlike, places of restful escape with a sense of spirituality, and share timelessness with the works of other eras.

    The main focus on Lorusso’s mostly narrative work is to provide the viewer with a starting point, a place of engagement for the viewer to then reinterpret the scene as they see it. As telling a story has always been an important vehicle for human interaction, Lorusso believes in the ability and power to tell a story through his image making , being able to connect with the viewer in the process.

    While in school, Lorusso was recruited by Hallmark Cards, Inc. and from 1988 to 1999 served as an artist in their greeting card division. Lorusso has served as instructor of painting and drawing at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Scottsdale Artists School.

    Lorusso’s work has been shown internationally and has won numerous awards and honors, he is considered a leading figure in the field of contemporary figurative realism. He has been featured in American Artist magazine, Southwest Art, U.S. Art, Art & Antiques, The Artists Magazine, Art News, American Art Collector, International Artist and Art Talk magazines. Lorusso’s work is part of many private collections; his work is in the permanent collections of the Albrecht-Kemper Museum, St.Joseph, Missouri, the Beach Museum at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, and the Wichita Museum of Art, Wichita, Kansas. Joseph Lorusso is currently represented by McLarry Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM, Bonner-David Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ,  Cavalier Galleries, New York, Jones and Terwilliger Galleries, Carmel, CA, Broadmoor Galleries, Colorado Springs, CO and Hancock Gallery, Newcastle,UK.

    LIVE COURSE FAQ

    How many registrations are required for a course to start?

    A minimum of 8 registrations are required.  If 8 registrations are not received by the time the course is 24 hours from starting, the course will be cancelled and all registrants will receive complete refunds.

    What is the maximum number of people in a course?

    This varies for each course.  The maximum number of registrations is decided by the instructor.

    Can I get a refund?

    Up until 72 hours before a course’s first session you can receive a complete refund. You can cancel your registration via the My Account portal, or by contacting [email protected].

    After this time no refunds will be given (if you have extenuating circumstances you believe justify a refund, contact us at [email protected]).

    Can I register for a course already in progress?

    No. Once a course has started, no new registrations are accepted.

    Where will my course be held?

    All courses meet online over Zoom. You will need a device equipped with a camera and a microphone to fully participate. 

    If you have not used Zoom before, learn about how to use it here.

    If you don’t regularly use Zoom, we recommend you join your first session 10-15 minutes early in case your computer needs to install or update Zoom.

    How do I join my course?

    You will receive a welcome email from [email protected] when you register.  This email includes the Zoom link to join your course session.  You will also receive 24 hour and 2 hour reminder emails before each session, and each of these emails includes the Zoom link.  You can also access the Zoom link to join your course in your MastriusChat group.

    Are the sessions recorded?

    Yes, every session is recorded and are typically available 24 hours after a session ends.  All session recordings will remain available for the duration of the course, and for one month following the last session.  The recordings are viewable within the MastriusChat platform, and cannot be downloaded.

    What if I miss a session?

    You’ll be able to watch the session’s recording.  If you have questions the recording doesn’t address, you can ask them in the chat feed of your course’s private MastriusChat group.

    What is MastriusChat?

    MastriusChat is an online discussion platform.  You and your fellow course registrants will be assigned to a private MastriusChat group where you can connect and support eachother via the chat “feed”. Your group is also where you’ll access the session recordings. Other resources in your MastriusChat group include a link to join your course sessions, and a library your instructor can use to share resources.

    What is a Navigator?

    A Navigator is an artist who joins your course to ensure both instructor and registrants have an enjoyable experience. They support (as required) with technology, timekeeping, moderating questions, and between-session discussions on MastriusChat. The Navigator has also joined the course as participant, and just like you, they’re wanting to grow their skills and learn the material.
