MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST
Greg Newbold began drawing and painting the world around him at the age of three and never looked back. His artistic training includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Brigham Young University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hartford, as well as numerous workshops and seminars from accomplished artists such as Michael Workman, Josh Clare, David Dibble, and Bill Perkins.
Greg spent over twenty-five years creating artwork for notable clients such as Simon & Schuster, Random House, Heinz Foods, Sony Pictures, Fedex, Harper Collins, Smuckers, Kleenex, Boys’ Life Magazine, Barnes & Noble, American Express, and The Wall Street Journal. His work has received illustration industry honors from the Society of Illustrators (NYC), Communication Arts, Spectrum, and 3×3, among others. His paintings have been awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals from the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles. Greg has also illustrated numerous children’s books including If Picasso Painted a Snowman, If da Vinci Painted a Dinosaur, and If Monet Painted a Monster. Among other picture books, Greg has illustrated The Little Match Girl, The Touch of the Master’s Hand, Winter Lullaby, and Spring Song.
Now focusing primarily on gallery work, Greg draws inspiration from the grand desert vistas of the western United States as well as the more intimate scenes surrounding the area in which he was raised. His subjects range from monumental sandstone canyons and mesas to the delicate blooms of hollyhocks. He has a particular soft spot for agricultural subjects such as hay bales, farm animals, machinery, and the people who work the land.
Greg is endlessly enchanted by the desert and mountain landscapes of the American West and finds them a rich source of inspiration. “I can go just about anywhere and find something that moves me. The well of painting subjects will never run dry,” he says. Greg’s work is often stylized in shape and color, a natural extension of some of his favorite influences such as Maynard Dixon, Grant Wood, The Canadian Group of Seven, N.C. Wyeth, and others. In the end, Greg hopes his work makes viewers feel connected to the land and enjoy a sense of place that surrounds him in the West’s wide-open spaces.
Greg’s work is included in the corporate collections of Zion’s Bank, Utah Transit Authority, Boy Scouts of America, and Salt Lake City Corporation, as well as in the permanent collection of the Springville Museum of Art and numerous private collections.
Greg’s painting Desert Grace was featured on the December 2022 cover of Western Art Collector. His work was also included in the retrospective show Maynard Dixon’s American West: Along the Distant Mesa at Medicine Man Gallery and in the accompanying book. He is also featured in the upcoming Masters of Drawing show at Medicine Man Gallery in February 2025, which will showcase a who’s who of the top contemporary landscape and western artists working today.
Greg has had at least one work included in the Spring Salon at Utah’s Springville Museum of Art in each of the last several years, winning an Award of Merit in 2022 for his work Three Horse Power. The Springville Spring Salon, now in its 100th year, is the longest-running juried art salon in the western United States. Greg was honored to have his painting Beckoning the Peace of Wild Things included in the 100th Anniversary exhibit, which ran from April to July 2024.
As a rising star in the contemporary western art scene, Greg is proud to be represented by Legacy and Manitou Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson, Arizona; and David Ericson Fine Art in Salt Lake City, Utah.
