MEDIUMS: Oil
SPECIALTY: ✔ Technique

With over 20 years of experience as an academically trained painter specializing in oils, I bring a wealth of practical knowledge and a passion for teaching to Mastrius. In my mentor group, we focus primarily on working from life, allowing us to capture the nuances of the subject in a way that photographs simply cannot. (That being said, working from a photograph is allowed and will be demonstrated as well. This includes landscape, seascape, larger interiors, etc.)

Participants are invited into my studio to experience live demonstrations and engage in meaningful discussions. Together, we explore the “do’s and don’ts” of working from life—covering everything from arranging objects and controlling lighting to composition techniques and cultivating an objective eye. I also emphasize the importance of good painting materials and where to source them, along with innovative approaches such as drawing with paint and effective colour mixing.

We also conduct personal critiques within the group setting, ensuring that everyone has the chance to benefit from constructive feedback. This collaborative approach not only enhances individual skills but also promotes a culture of continuous improvement and mutual support.

Together, we work in an encouraging and supportive environment that motivates us to embrace diligent practice. By paying attention to these key aspects, I believe we can set ourselves up for success in the wonderful journey of painting.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mentorship with David Boyd, Jr.

Artist Statement:

There’s something truly magical about painting, especially from life, that draws me in. As I immerse myself in nature, I find endless abstract beauty and wonder that I strive to translate into a painted image.

In my work, I embrace every shape, color, line, and texture that emerges. Each stroke feels like a journey, guiding me to someplace new and unpredictable. I welcome even the wildest marks, letting them lead me into new realms of creativity.

Creating is a pure delight, and it comes from a deep desire to express feelings and thoughts that would otherwise go unspoken. This conversation between the self, the canvas and the viewer is exhilarating, and I can’t help but follow wherever it takes me.
