Karen Pedersen
EMERGING ARTIST
Mentored By: Marcela Strasdas, Caprice Hogg & Doug Swinton
Primarily self taught Karen has been a working artist for the past 20 years. Karen works mainly in oil, painting both in studio and plein air. Believing one of the best ways of observing and studying nature firsthand is to paint plein air (painting outdoors) Growing up in Calgary AB, Canada Karen has had easy access to the Foothills, Rocky Mountains, and the unique prairie landscape of the area. Her approach to art has been a combination of imagination and intuition which is inspired by her surroundings. Using dynamic brushstrokes and saturated colour, she captures the play of texture and temperature, challenging the viewer to look deeper, to see beyond the obvious.
Notes: The theme for this show is gratitude. I chose the subjects for my three paintings to represent the things around me from nature that I’m am grateful for. The blossoms of garden flowers in an old green vase; painting in the Hamlet of Rosebud AB, CDN with the ever changing landscape. And the serenity of walking among trees - the rich smells and bird sounds. These are things I never take for granted.
