Mentored By: Connie Geerts, John David Anderson, Kristen Palana
I was born Gwendoline Kay Boyter in St. Andrews, Scotland and continue to use this as my artist name in honour of my heritage. Recognized locally as Wendy Marchand, I am now located in Tiny, Ontario, Canada. In my art practice, I am drawn to feminist issues encompassing themes related to gender equality, women’s rights, and social justice. I aim to produce art that celebrates the multifaceted nature of women, their strengths, and their stories by challenging societal norms yet promote gender justice and equality in all aspects of life. As a visual artist, I have a special interest in photography, painting, sculpture, and printmaking.
Notes: In this series, I express profound gratitude for the enduring strength, wisdom, and beauty inherent in every stage of a woman’s life. Through symbolic representations, I honour the journey of womanhood and the invaluable contributions of women across generations. Maiden: A delicate spray of baby’s breath nestled within a basket captures the essence of youth. The soft whites echo innocence and the promise of a blossoming spirit—a life yet to be shaped. This piece honours the purity and endless potential within the early stage of womanhood. Mother: Three pink carnations rise in a clear vase, each bloom representing a generation: my daughter, my sister, and our mother. The pink carnation is a timeless symbol of motherhood, embodying love, strength, and the nurturing role women hold within the family. The intertwined stems of the carnations symbolize the unbreakable bond and collective strength shared among women in a family, illustrating how our lives are interconnected and support one another. Crone: The lotus flower, emerging gracefully from murky waters, symbolizes the wisdom and experience of the Crone. Painted in soft greys and whites, the lotus represents a lifetime of insight forged through life’s challenges, embodying the beauty that comes from resilience and knowledge. Through these works, I express deep gratitude for the resilience, wisdom, and nurturing spirit of women. This series is a tribute to the bonds between women, offering a space for reflection and recognition of the power we hold together.
