MEDIUMS: Oil
SPECIALTY: ✔ Technique

Bill will help you master vibrant color, visual pathways, value relationships, edge quality, working with shapes rather than lines, and brush techniques. We’ll discuss how to use various supplies and tools efficiently and effectively. He’ll guide you on where to invest in quality materials and where you can save without compromising your work’s integrity. Expect useful art critiques and personalized feedback to help you understand your strengths and areas for improvement, along with strategies for self-critiquing to foster independent growth.

Our mentorship group will focus on mastering the fundamental techniques and advanced skills that define exceptional oil painting, emphasizing landscape and floral painting. You’ll learn to see complex scenes in simple shapes and capture the intricacies of values and color to create dynamic and lifelike works. Everything we explore – composition, brushwork, tools – will be tailored to enhance your unique style and vision. My extensive experience and classical training will be at your disposal as we tackle the technical and creative aspects of painting.

You will learn to identify the sources of light that affect atmospheric color and value relationships, how to quickly organize the interplay of light and shadow to lead and keep the viewer engaged with your painting, and how to craft convincing edges that bring depth and realism to your paintings. We’ll explore techniques for working with thin and thick paint and creating dynamic textures that add life to your work.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bill Inman sold his first painting through a professional art gallery in 1983 at just 17. While attending art school in the 80s, he continued selling his work and went full-time in 1991.

During his art school years, Bill became captivated by his mentor’s Russian Impressionist style, characterized by bold brushwork and vibrant colors. For over a decade, he embraced and refined this approach. Although his style has evolved, he still loves incorporating bold brushwork and juicy color into his paintings.

Bill aims to use minimal detail to spark viewers’ imagination, inviting them to participate in the creative process. He wants his paintings to feel like windows into beautiful, serene scenes that beckon to forget the world, and offer moments of peace – a chance to appreciate the incredible beauty Heavenly Father blessed us with.

Bill uses plein air studies, memory, imagination, and reference photos to create his loose, naturalistic works. His love of painting is closely matched by his passion for teaching. Since conducting his first workshop in 1993, his Master Oil Painting courses have helped thousands of artists in over 100 countries improve their skills and understanding of oil painting. Bill generously shares his knowledge – he holds nothing back. He wants each of his students to exceed his accomplishments.

He is a recipient of the Congressional Art Award, and his work has been featured in Southwest Art, Fine Art Connoisseur, Art and Antique, and Western Art magazines. His paintings are part of numerous national and international collections, from Switzerland to Saudi Arabia and throughout the United States and Canada.
