MEDIUMS: Oil
SPECIALTY: ✔ Technique

Our focus will be on honing the essential, hands-on skills of painting—everything from choosing what to paint, getting the image onto the canvas, preparing the palette, and executing the piece, all the way through to self-critiquing your work. I’m genuinely excited to see your skills grow, whatever your preferred medium or style. As a representational painter, I can guide you in creating realistic form and color if that’s something you want to explore. Or, if your style leans toward simplifying, abstracting, exaggerating, or amplifying, I’m here for that too!

One of my strengths is color mixing, a skill I fine-tuned years ago working in a paint store, back when we matched colors by eye rather than machine. I’ll share everything I know to make color mixing easier for you.

I’ve also spent many years working with aspiring artists, often around my dining room table, helping them break through self-critique or past judgments that told them they “couldn’t draw.” Art is all about self-expression, and if you have a self to express, you can make art. Plus, I’ve got tips, tricks, and shortcuts to make the process smoother. I’m here to help—let’s get started!

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mentorship with David Boyd, Jr.

Growing up in the suburbs of Ontario Janet never dreamed that being an artist was in her future. Or that flowers would become so important. Marigolds were her town’s flower of choice, and they never appealed.

Though she studied art in university it was always with the aim of teaching, not self expression. When her first child was born she began to realize how integral creating was to her mental health and overall wellness.

How she wished that someone would walk into her studio (which has usually meant her laundry room) and say to her “you are an artist.” But that didn’t happen. Like many others, Janet has slowly walked forward, diligently creating, trying to let go of the need for validation and grab the calling to simply create beauty for the world to enjoy. To paint because this is what she’s been made to do, and this is what brings joy to her life. Over time she came to realize this is what it means to be an artist: simply, to create.

Currently Janet’s works explore colour and depth of field, moving from crisp lines to blurred edges, from realism to abstraction. She believes beauty can transform a house into a home, a boardroom into a table of open discussion, a facility into a place where community flourishes.

Janet has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Greater Vancouver, Saskatoon, and Victoria. Her works are held in local, national and international private collections.  She is represented by the Gallery at Matticks Farm.
