Mentoring Aspiring Recording Artists

GENRE: ✔ Alternative ✔ Blues ✔ Christian Contemporary ✔ Country ✔ Folk ✔ Gospel ✔ Indie ✔ Pop ✔ R&B ✔ Rock
ROLE: ✔ Front of House Engineer ✔ Sound Engineer

I started doing this by accident when I was 19 years old. I’ve been in and out of it over the last 40 years, and along the way managed to work with a few good people who helped me along.

I’ve been in local professional gigs, tried the road, done “Contemporary” worship and Christian performance, and commercial gigs.

What you can expect is that I can use my experience to help you get through some of the issues you will face in an effort to make it simpler and hopefully less painful. Pieces of the puzzle to work on.

  1. Why do you want to do this?
  2. Are you suited to do this work? It’s doesn’t have a lot of external rewards, and is not as cool as it looks from the outside.
  3. How do you work with musicians. How to manage multiple personalities successfully.
  4. Working with management: People have a lot of input, how to sort out the priorities.
  5. How to manage yourself. You might be getting in your own way.
  6. Nuts and bolts number 1: How to setup a PA.
  7. Nuts and Bolts number 2: How to do a soundcheck.
  8. Nuts and Bolts number 3: Running a gig.
  9. Event management. You will get dragged into this whether you ant to or not, might as well know how to do it.
  10. Troubleshooting a problem: Learning to think laterally.

If you look at the above list, you may notice that has more to do with the human side than the tech side. That’s on purpose. I’m more interested in building good sound humans than how to EQ the perfect snare drum sound.

The strange thing is, when you manage to get the human side right, EQing the perfect snare drum gets so much easier.
