MEDIUM: Acrylic | Printmaking | Textiles
SPECIALTY: ✔ Generalist

As an art mentor, my role is multifaceted, encompassing not only the technical aspects of artmaking but also the deeper, more holistic elements that contribute to a fulfilling and sustainable creative life. My primary focus will be on providing thoughtful and constructive critiques, guiding my mentees through the process of self-reflection and growth.

Mindfulness and embodiment will be central to my approach. I will encourage my mentees to cultivate a deep awareness of their surroundings, their body, and their creative impulses. This heightened sense of presence will allow them to tap into their intuition, which will be a driving force in their artistic exploration. I will emphasize the importance of play and experimentation, fostering an environment where creative problem-solving can flourish without the constraints of rigid expectations.

Ultimately, my support extends beyond the immediate task of art-making. I will be a guide, a sounding board, and a source of inspiration, helping my mentees to develop a sustainable and fulfilling creative practice. By nurturing their self-awareness, their intuition, and their willingness to embrace the unknown, I will empower them to navigate the challenges and joys of a life dedicated to the arts.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artwork by Michaela Hoppe

My artistic practice is grounded in an exploration of the human body and the lived experience of inhabiting physical space. Through extensive embodied research, such as taking long walks, I seek to capture the essence of what it means to feel alive. I am particularly drawn to sensations like the warmth of sunlight on skin, the translucent quality of light filtering through leaves, hot and cold therapy, dancing, active noticing and the fluid movement of limbs through water.

These visceral, somatic experiences inform the development of my abstract paintings, which aim to visually translate these embodied states. The overlapping, fluctuating forms in my work represent a dynamic interplay between internal and external realms, inviting the viewer to engage with a tangible yet elusive sense of place. My process-driven approach allows me to embrace the unpredictable, with the materiality of paint guiding the evolution of each composition just as much as my own intuitive gestures.

Color is a central element in my practice, as I constantly experiment with varied palettes to evoke different emotional and atmospheric qualities. With a compulsion for experimentation and a need for exploration, the pure enjoyment of materiality and paint is a driving force. Shifts between vibrant saturation and muted earthiness create a feeling of fluctuating temperatures, while the organic nature of my forms imbues them with a sense of sentience. Ultimately, my paintings strive to be both ethereal and visceral, celebrating the beauty and complexity of the world we inhabit through an invitation to actively notice and appreciate the present moment.
