Hello Artists! I am excited to offer group mentorship through Mastrius.

I grew up in the 1960’s as the daughter and granddaughter of women who loved to do oil painting, surface design and pottery. As a life-long artist with a deep visual curiosity, I began to study art formally in the 80’s when conceptual art was still a force. My education took me through the Fine Arts, like drawing and painting, to Graphic Design and Illustration with gouache, acrylics, oils and inks, to digital drawing with software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and finally to Métis/Indigenous art forms like beadwork and caribou hair tufting. In my personal practice, I’ve discovered that I can use all of these skills when making art. Having a ‘concept’ in mind, usually a question I would like to have answered, or an emotion I want to express, I use a sketchbook to work out ideas, make mistakes, record thoughts, and plan out work. Which colours to use, perhaps bright, muted or sparse, are important decisions that affect mood, feeling and communication. As I investigate my question or emotion, I make multiple pieces investigating many aspects of the original question. This is how I build a body of work. When I’m done, knowledge lives with each piece and with the entire body of work.

In a mentorship with me, you will build confidence by identifying the traits that are unique in your approach to art making. Learn to enhance your creative strengths, like your most productive time of day, what wakes you up, what shuts you down. Ask yourself what you are curious about and how does or should that enter your art making. Identify qualities that make your work unique and valuable, build motivation, and make progress, even if you only have a small amount of time each week. As a group, we can work on formal, technical and artistic techniques and processes. Together we will find the secret sauce that keeps you happy and making work that is fresh and engaging.
