MEDIUMS: Acrylic | Oil
SPECIALTY: ✔ Technique ✔ Business ✔ Plein Air

My Mentorship group will be geared toward representational painters working in oil and acrylic. I will introduce them to the Painting in Layers Method of painting. My mentorship group will focus on each artist becoming a more skilled painter in order to better express their unique vision and inspiration. I will give conceptional and technical critiques of paintings in progress or in need of improvement. This will include critiques and coaching on design and composition, use of color, edges, shapes, values, atmospheric and linear perspective, and using technique to convey movement and vitality.

I am especially skilled in painting water and can share the techniques that I have discovered and learned over the years in conveying the transparency, reflective quality and movement of water. I am also an accomplished plein air painter, participating in 6 to 7 plein air painting events annually.

I will share all the practical and artistic knowledge that I have to help artists be more successful in plein air painting. I will also do demos and paint-alongs of the Painting in Layer Method.

I will also provide art career coaching:

1. Defining goals and developing a strategy for achieving them
2. Developing a signature style that is unique and recognizable, a brand
3. Building, growing and nurturing a collector base
4. Building a distribution strategy for the artist’s work
5. How to promote and market your work online.

About the Painting in Layers Method:

The Painting in Layers Method helps you achieve optimal values, design and color when plein air painting. It is especially valuable in counter-acting the tendency to gray down your colors and tone down your values when painting outdoors under the brightest light bulb in creation, the sun.

The pop of the discord or complementary color is seen and not seen throughout the painting by the viewer. The eye does not read a difference in terms of value, but does see the difference in terms of complementary color, providing color harmony and color interest throughout the painting.

The underpainting also helps to carry the image when viewed at a distance and reflects more color light back to the viewer, giving your painting a powerful sense of vitality and luminosity. Painting in layers with some of the bright complementary colors showing through also provides depth. It works especially well to capture the transparent and reflective qualities of atmosphere and water. The Painting in Layers Method also includes drawing throughout the painting process, use of various types of paint application including different brush strokes, use of palette knife and more.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mentorship with David Boyd, Jr.

Sometimes the idea for a painting spontaneously presents itself as in plein air painting. I am inspired by the quiet meandering of a river, the vastness of a desert gorge, or the way afternoon sun lights the curve of an arch. Sometimes my paintings are inspired by many impressions and feelings of a place. I use technique to express relationships and create a sense of atmosphere, time and space.

I use a Painting in Layers method which combines the value, shadow and shape ideas of chiaroscuro with color ideas from the impressionist painters. This method creates color interest and harmony as well as a structural foundation for the final layers in oil. I continue to sketch and resketch, using a sensitive line so that the image achieves an organic quality with the impression of movement, depth and dimension as well as subtle light effects such as transparency of water and sky.

Award-winning artist, Marie Massey, has been painting professionally for 24 years and teaching the “Painting in Layers” method to adults working in oil and acrylic for 12 years. Marie is an avid plein air painter and does 5 to 7 plein air painting events annually.

In September of 2014, Marie founded the Central Coast Plein Air Painters (CCPAP), a group of 700 plus artists living and working on California’s Central Coast. Marie coordinates periodic plein air paint outs and produces juried exhibitions for the CCPAP, working in cooperation with various local Arts organizations, businesses and galleries including First Friday Santa Cruz, the Arts Council for Monterey County and more.

Marie’s paintings have been juried into more than 130 National and Regional shows where they have won many awards including Best of Show, People’s Choice, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as well as many Honorable Mentions, merchant and purchase awards.

Marie’s work sells well and is in private, corporate and government collections. Marie is grateful to be represented by select galleries across the USA including The SFWA Gallery in San Francisco, CA, Reflections Elegante Gallery in Monterey, CA, 480 Lighthouse Gallery in Pacific Grove, CA Art of Santa Cruz in Capitola, Ca, and ACEP Gallery in Estes Park, Co
