MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in 1954 on the West Coast of Canada, I settled in the UK as a young adult. I currently divide my time between home and studio in North London and a workspace in rural Dorset.
Exploring and responding to the world around me, through a variety of mediums – printmaking, collage and painting – I use the physical environment as a vehicle for discovery and enlightenment, taking what’s in front of me and drawing on a culmination of observation, perceptual thinking and memory to create my visual narrative. I work with a variety of objects includiing vessels/containers, ancient and modern, natural in origin and man made, domestic and decorative. The flotsam and jetsam of walks in nature, through forest or by the seashore, stuffed in pockets or cloth bags, come into the studio and are reminders of feelings, temperatures and colours. They find their way into the work as I attempt to translate an experience into a fully realised artwork.
The flora, fauna, containers and vessels depicted in my work are not bound by a particular setting. Rather than time or place, the viewer is asked to contemplate the interrelationships between artist and subject matter and between the subjects themselves. I strive for a feeling of air and light in the work; that fragility reinforced by the lacy structure of a recurring form that can be read as a shell in some of the prints and as a vessel in others. Recent events in the Middle East have set me to adjusting my eye to the horror and sorrow unfolding there. The compositions marked by the layering as I set my printed and collaged forms on unadorned fields of white and unbleached recycled paper, creating a lyrical pattern of surface decoration that can also be seen in my large-scale drawings.
For my prints, the ethos is one of sustainability, making use of mundane, recycled materials like Tetra Pak cartons, which I cut into drypoints before inking them using water based non-toxic inks, as plates. Each unique print is the product of multiple passes through the printing press. I compose and determine the palette as I proceed, incorporating additional plates with each pass. The result is an ever changing meditation on shape, colour, and pattern. What was once observed and considered has been transformed by improvisation and an exciting element of chance.
In addition to my artistic practice I am an educator whose approach to art making is about freeing up expectations and enjoying the journey of discovery. I encourage participants to develop and explore their own ideas leading to exciting and unexpected outcomes. I teach online with a studio based in the USA, run drawing workshops for an academy of art developed for the homeless in London as well as printmaking and drawing workshops for local art groups in the west of England and in my studio.
