MEDIUM: Acrylic | Drawing | Mixed Media | Watercolor SPECIALTY: ✔ Artistic Process & Mindset ✔ Color ✔ Creating Bodies of Work
This group will be focused, not on a particular technique, but on ways to become really familiar with and strengthen one’s individual creative expression. Open for discussion will be all the parts that go into making work. We will concentrate on: inspiration, materials, the studio space and time, practice, when and how to show work, title, create an inventory, artist statement, photographing, pricing, presentation and letting go of work. We can discuss the art markets which are many, fluid and fast changing but it will not be the primary focus.
In my practice I have found that working with a notebook to gather sensory information, loosen up the hand, get connected to what is happening in the moment and in general, will get inspiration flowing. Learning to work through not knowing with curiosity and openness will expand ones confidence and capacity to express personal vision, whatever that may be. This group may be especially useful for those in transition, those facing a creative block, anyone who would like to expand horizons or those, like me, truly passionate about making work.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST
Artist Statement: I use paint to observe and examine the relationship between matter and energy, colour and form, the body and its environment. Through abstraction, integrating and disintegrating an accumulation of facts, experiences, conjecture, voluntary and involuntary physical body movements into each piece. An essential element of the work is the expedition into the unknown reaching for truth. The space of the canvas is that area where I can find my perfect form; a place where I have first and last say in the structure and atmosphere of something. While working, that which is not “true” is destroyed, altered, fiddled with until a right alignment happens. I use the recognisable colour and form of my surroundings, which at the moment is North Mayo, in the far west of Ireland, absorbing the ever-changing infinite detail in the relationship between sea, sky, land, night, day, the interdependence between the fluid, light, colour and linear structures to both inform me as to how the world works and give me something to bounce off of; This touch relies upon a particular form of attention: sensorial, open-ended, the energetic equivalent of fire.
Bio: Born in Dublin, Ireland. Received a BA in Fine Art Painting from The National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1993. Afterwards moved to New York City. From 1993-2013 lived and worked in NYC, working with art consultants (1998-present), showed with Thomas Werner Gallery, Chelsea (2005/6), Boltax Gallery, Shelter Island, NY (2001-12). Currently represented by Sara Nightingale Gallery, Sag Harbor, NY. Led workshops at The Open Centre in NYC (2006-2008) and now at The Ballinglen Arts Foundation.
In 2007 received a fellowship award to The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, County Mayo, in the west of Ireland and returned for a month-long residency every year until 2013 when I moved there full time. Mayo, where I have family, turned out to be really good for the next development in my work. I have become really interested in the experimental work and writing of the 17th Century Irish Alchemist Robert Boyle. My work is exhibited regularly in group and solo shows throughout Ireland and in the US, Including the with the Claremorris Gallery, Hamilton Gallery, Sligo and at the RHA Annual Exhibition. In 2020, I received The Arts Council Visual Arts Bursary award for research into the impact abstract painting can have on the body. In 2023 I presented ‘An Artist Reads Boyle’ at the Robert Boyle Summer School. I work collaboratively with writer Crystal Gandrud; our first book, “Radiate Outwards, Incrementally, a manual”, is to be published by The Owl Circus Press in 2024. I am a Board member of The Yeats Society, Sligo.
