“Gaye is a fabulous teacher and mentor! I feel extremely fortunate to have found her when I first started oils as she was instrumental in guiding me through each step of the way from beginner to recently attaining my Signature Status with the FCA. She is one of the best: knowledgeable, respectful, encouraging, and supportive.”

– Leslie Lendvoy, Vancouver, BC

“Dedicated and talented with a wealth of experience, Gaye is truly master artist and teacher. Through her workshops, she was able to demystify plein air for me, breaking it down into very do-able steps, that I still follow. I’m no longer intimidated by getting out and painting outdoors. It was through my very fortunate opportunity to work in a mentorship with Gaye that I credit my most significant leap of improvement. “

Kate Tooke, Vernon BC

Course Description

Creating the illusion of light from mere paint is not rocket science, although it seems like there is a certain “magic” around this process that feels elusive to many painters. In this three-session course, you’ll learn how to train your eyes to see precise color and value mixtures, so that you can paint light perfectly every time!

Creating compelling light involves merely seeing the color and value relationships accurately, and then knowing how to arrive at those mixtures successfully.

Through demonstration, practice, in and out of class, and critiques, you’ll learn color mixing, and how to achieve the correct values, saturations, and hues.

  • The first session will be focused on teaching and a demo. Students will be given homework to do the same painting on their own time.
  • The second session will start with critiques of the homework paintings submitted, and then another demo by the instructor. Your homework assignment will be to paint one of your own references and apply the principles learned in the first session.
  • The third session will be a critique of the homework and one last demo by Gaye.

You Will Learn:

  • How to SEE the correct values and colors for all types of light
  • How to MIX the correct values and colors
  • How to “TURN ON THE LIGHT” in your paintings, creating the illusion of SUNLIGHT and ATMOSPHERE

Instructor Bio

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. And it has always brought me a sense of satisfaction and joy.

My paintings are not difficult to understand; they are merely an exploration of that which brings me joy, and makes my heart skip a beat. That is the experience I wish to share with those that view my paintings – to stir the imagination and quicken the spirit and transport to a wild and interesting place.

The single most compelling aspect of art making for me is creating the illusion of light with mere paint. It is always a challenge, and is always engaging. That alchemy for me is pretty heady stuff.

In addition to painting I enjoy a lovely connection with those looking to shorten their learning curve by studying with me. Turns out I really enjoy sharing my passion, and love to take students on my plein-air adventures in particular. Check out my workshops page if that is something that sounds appealing to you.

Whether you are here to look at paintings or to find out some more about workshops, welcome. Thank you so much for your interest!
