Kristen Palana is an American/Portuguese multidisciplinary artist based in Malawi. After decades as a digital artist, in 2021 she reconnected with her fine art roots. Inspired by the lofty mission statements used by the world’s top organizations, her mixed media drawings are a call to action to visualize better outcomes for our lives, communities, and the planet. Kristen’s earlier animations have screened at over 75 international film festivals, earning numerous “Best Animated Short Film” awards. As an educator, Kristen has taught at universities on four continents. She co-founded the Film and Digital Media BFA at The American University of Rome, where she was tenured and led the Film and Digital Media Program between 2013-2016. From 2016 to 2019, Kristen expanded her teaching to academic institutions and NGOs in Myanmar, including at the groundbreaking American University of Myanmar. When not making fine art, Kristen works as a designer, educator, and consultant for international agencies, Kristen crafts training programs catering to diverse audiences. Her learners range from refugees and diplomats to individuals without formal education living on less than $2 USD a day, reflecting Kristen’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.
Notes: Image Notes: Unity: Tree of Life. -The tree of life is an ancient archetype that is common to many cultures, religions, and spiritual traditions. It's said to represent the connection between the Earth and heavens, depicting a life force that connects everyone as well as the cycle of life and death. My version aims to emphasize UNITY and incorporates patterns from each inhabited continent. A New Beginning: This mixed-media drawing was created to celebrate the birth of new life that springs up from the fodder of the past. May this image serve as a gentle reminder of your inner resilience and the fertile ground of possibilities that come with each new chapter in your life. The Birthday: This experimental drawing is set up like stained glass and interlaced with textile patterns that celebrate the wisdom of age from cultures that hold their eldest in high esteem. It features the silhouette of a woman on her birthday. The background is meant to be a global conversation (with 6 inhabited continents represented) symbolizing the empowerment and support these cultures provide to those who might feel undervalued by time. The patterns are meant to give encouragement to the woman whose worth only grows with each passing day.
