Self vs Gallery Representation
Pros, Cons, & Choosing the Best Path For You
Let’s be honest—there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to building your art career. Some artists thrive with gallery partnerships, while others prefer to self-represent, so they can sell independently and on their own terms. More often than not we see artists doing both - balancing gallery and self representation.
So what is best for you? How do you decide what will work for your unique goals and art career?
Mastrius Mentors Julie A. Bell & Sheldon Greenberg will share their real-world experience and discuss the benefits and drawbacks on both sides of the representation decision. Together, they’ll break down what has worked well for them, what to watch out for, and how to figure out what’s right for you.
Whether you're aiming to attract gallerists or represent yourself, this conversation will break down the benefits and trade-offs of both approaches—plus, what it really takes to thrive, either way!
You will:
- Learn the inner workings and expectations of gallery partnerships, the benefits and limitations
- Understand which path aligns best to your creative and professional goals
- Discover how to find opportunities in both and how to build a career you love
- Recognize red flags & best practices so you can choose the right opportunities for you
If you’ve ever struggled to decide whether to pursue gallery representation or go solo, then this event is for you!
Mastrius events are always LIVE & INTERACTIVE so you can get your questions answered and see real progress in your work!

Meet Julie A. Bell
Assemblage Art | Mixed Media
I would be happy to work with artists who wish to learn about mixed media collage and assemblage on expanding their knowledge of the history of collage and its place in the art world, technique and materials on a variety of substrates, composition and color.
I would also be happy to discuss topics like how to start showing your art, when are you ready for galleries, types of galleries, outdoor art shows (how to choose and what you need for set up) and general research skills, with beginning or emerging artists working in any media.
I am also happy to (gently and with respect) provide feedback on work and lead group critiques. I have many years of experience I would love to share in any way that’s helpful. I also love to listen and appreciate artists’ experiences and personal journeys. I find that, no matter where we are in our artmaking/career, we all learn a lot from community. Thank you for the opportunity.

The paintings are most often represented in a moment of time, and giving the feeling that something is about to or has just happened.
After the Covid pandemic I have began to think more about how our lives have become more isolated even when we come together.
In some of the paintings we see figures involved in there own world, and other works the figures are not represented but a sense of people nearby. The contrast of each frozen moment coming to life. Flat shapes versus detail and finished shapes versus the unresolved areas. Each giving context to the other.
