The Power of Contrast

Are You Using Contrast To Its Full Potential?

Did you know you can use CONTRAST in more than just value? Do you want to add more DEPTH and DIMENSION to your work? Understanding the power of contrast can help you create strong focal points in your artwork to draw the viewer in.

Contrast is an important PRINCIPLE OF DESIGN. The right amount of contrast can make a painting pop, grab the viewer’s attention, and evoke emotion.

Usually, people’s first thought regarding contrast is just VALUE, the difference between light areas and dark areas. But, there are many other ways you can create contrast to improve the quality and effectiveness of your artwork. Join Mastrius Mentors Sheldon Greenberg & Ken Goldman for an informative panel that will explore contrast of COLOR, SIZE , TEXTURE, SHAPE, VALUE , LINE, and more!

In this panel, you’ll learn:

  • How to identify and apply different TYPES OF CONTRAST to enhance the focal point of your paintings so you can tell your story well.
  • Techniques for utilizing COLOR contrast to EVOKE EMOTION and guide the viewer's eye.
  • Ways to incorporate SIZE & SHAPE contrast for dynamic compositions.
  • The impact of TEXTUREand LINE contrast in creating visual intrigue and balance.

The paintings are most often represented in a moment of time, and giving the feeling that something is about to or has just happened.

After the Covid pandemic I have began to think more about how our lives have become more isolated even when we come together.

In some of the paintings we see figures involved in there own world, and other works the figures are not represented but a sense of people nearby. The contrast of each frozen moment coming to life. Flat shapes versus detail and finished shapes versus the unresolved areas. Each giving context to the other.

Meet Ken Goldman

I approach each individual’s artwork without preconception and will only advise after carefully analyzing their artwork and reference photos in relation to what they tell me about their goals, intentions, successes and challenges. By doing this, I can usually find a constructive way for them to move forward. I believe in evaluating honestly, but with kindness, and always backing up my observations with an explanation. When critiquing, it’s important to not just point out mistakes, but to also point out areas of success.

Painting is a quest for dynamic visual balance; therefore, circulating a viewer’s eye throughout a well-designed composition is of utmost importance. Because choice of subject matter (objective, semi-objective or non-objective) is not a main concern, I work in any style or technique that is best suited to express a particular idea, exploring it tirelessly and thriving on the uncertainty of not always knowing my next move.

Some of my reasons for painting include

an attraction to certain light effects or unique compositions.
a desire to express deeply felt emotions and ideas — either narrative, poetic or formal; and
an appreciation for the simple joys of painting or drawing as an exercise in skill and draughtsmanship.
Art thrives on change. Without change, there is stagnation. New ideas are everywhere. If I stay open, they continually flow toward me from many directions, including nature, people, places, and literature.

Regarding Teaching, I believe it is as important to cultivate and circulate an art spirit as it is to teach skill and technique. This art spirit is about receiving and passing knowledge onto others – about interconnectedness and cooperation. By teaching and kindling this spirit, I gain new perspectives about my own work and that of others.
