Use Reference Photos Like a Pro
Using reference photos as inspiration is a common practice among artists, but did you know, not every photo is a good one to use?
Many reference photos are too busy, have a distorted perspective, or have poor lighting and too much contrast. So, how do you choose a good photo or modify a bad one so it’s useful?
Join Mastrius Mentors Anne Kulaff & Deborah Tilby for a panel discussion on how to use reference photos properly so they support your artistic growth, not hinder it.
In this event you’ll learn:
- The telltale signs of a GOOD vs. BAD reference photo
- How to avoid some COMMON MISTAKES artists make when choosing reference material
- How a reference photo can help you IMPROVE YOUR PAINTINGS or HINDER YOUR GROWTH
- How to effectively use MULTIPLE PHOTOS to create one compelling composition.
BRING YOUR QUESTIONS! Mastrius Mentors are here to help.
As always, Mastrius events are LIVE & INTERACTIVE!

I’m really excited to be mentoring Aspiring Artists! You are at the very beginning of your creative journey and I am honored to be a part of that process. In my group, the focus will be on building the technical skills you need to acquire confidence in your work. Doing so will allow your unique style to emerge naturally as we work together over time. Participants may work in the medium of their choice. I have taught a wide variety of drawing and painting mediums and will share technical expertise based on the individual needs of the group members.
Our sessions will be spent sharing knowledge through guided practice and constructive feedback. From time to time, I will do live demonstrations as appropriate for the group’s needs. I will emphasize attention to form, value, composition, color, and gesture. Drawing is an essential skill for all artists to have regardless of their medium or style–if you can draw, you can do anything! So many artists I’ve taught have lacked confidence in their drawing skills. There will be assignments that focus on perspective, proportion, and value mapping.
Throughout the mentorship, I will pay close attention to each member’s individual needs in terms of artistic development. I will offer customized guidance, suggestions, and critique to assist you in overcoming any obstacles or frustrations that may arise. I hope to positively influence your newly begun journey into the experience of being an artist!

Light and shadow is what initially draws me to a subject; the challenge of capturing the mood, time of day, and season in a representational yet loose way is what keeps me painting. My aim, whether it be in the studio or in the field, is to use colour as I see it, with a particular fondness for neutrals and earth colours, soft violets, rusts, and greens. The way the paint goes on is equally as important as what I mix on the palette; my intention is to indicate and represent, without becoming bogged down in the minutiae.
Weathered boats, old brick and textured stone, crashing waves and trees in every season, all afford me the opportunity to explore my interpretation of textures with both brush and knife work.
Accomplishing what I intend never ceases to be difficult, fascinating, and deeply fulfilling. It keeps me painting almost daily!
“I am passionate about my work; I truly love it and paint every day. Painting is a challenge, but always fascinating and deeply fulfilling.”
